Abstract

PREVALENCE AND SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF HEPATITIS B AND HEPATITIS C IN PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV (PLHIV): A MULTICENTER, RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Caratao, Isabelo

Significance: Viral Hepatitis progresses more rapidly and causes more health problems among people with HIV. With the rising cases of HIV in the country, the occurrence of Viral Hepatitis in PLHIV needs to be given notoriety as these infections are important public health issues.

Methodology: "This is a multicenter, retrospective study which included enrolled cases of PLHIV in two HIV Treatment Hubs in Cebu Province from January 2012 to June 2022. Included were those found to have Hepatitis B (HBV) and/or Hepatitis C (HCV) detected through a positive HBsAg and anti-HCV test. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the demographic data. Chi-square test was used to determine the association between variables and Cramer’s V statistic was used to determine the strength of its association."

Results: A total of 284 cases of PLHIV with Viral Hepatitis were reviewed. These were categorized as PLHIV with HBV, PLHIV with HCV and PLHIV with triple infection. Co-infection of HCV/HIV was more prevalent than HBV/HIV in this study. Notable cases of triple infection were also observed. The data obtained helps identify key high-risk groups and locales to target for a more aggressive information campaign. Inadequate knowledge encourages the already misinformed social stigma attached to HIV and Hepatitis which consequently leads to delays in detection and treatment. The psychosocial implications, economic burden and health consequences of these diseases individually and altogether, casts a heavy burden on the stricken making this a public health concern worth revisiting.

Keywords: Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, PLHIV, co-infection, triple infection
